WE START BY UNDERSTANDING

A conversation before a policy.

Some situations exceed basic limits. An agent may review liability exposure, assets, and underlying policies before discussing umbrella coverage.

Confirmed carrier options for this conversation: Nationwide · Travelers This list does not guarantee availability, rate, or acceptance; the agent confirms product, state, ZIP code, appointment, and eligibility.

Common coverage categories

  • May extend liability protection over eligible underlying policies.
  • May address injuries, property damage, or certain personal claims under its terms.
  • Usually requires minimum limits on the underlying policies.

How a claim commonly works

  1. Protect people and call 911 if there is an emergency.
  2. Document date, location, photos, details, and any available report.
  3. Report the event promptly through the insurer’s channel and keep the claim number.
  4. An adjuster or insurer may review coverage, damage, and documents before deciding.

What an agent may ask

  • Existing auto, home, or business policies.
  • Current limits, risks, and assets you want to discuss.

CONCEPTS FOR READING YOUR POLICY

Words worth knowing.

Deductible

The amount a person may pay out of pocket before eligible coverage applies.

Limit

The most an insurer could pay for a category of covered claim, subject to the policy.

Premium

The cost of the policy. It can change with risk, coverage, location, and eligibility.

Exclusion

A situation, property, service, or cause the policy does not cover or treats in a limited way.

Declarations page

A summary of insured people or property, dates, coverages, limits, and deductibles.

Important: It does not automatically cover damage to your own car or home. The final policy defines covered events, limits, and exclusions.
